| Bio-identical Hormone Replacement |
Bio-identical hormones have the same chemical structure as hormones that are made by the human body. The key to natural or bio-identical versus synthetic is the molecular structure of the hormone produced. In order for a replacement hormone to fully replicate the function of hormones which were originally naturally produced and present in the human body, the chemical makeup must exactly match the original. Scientists have discovered quite a while back that there are significant differences between hormones that are natural to humans (Bio-identical) and synthetic (including animal-derived) preparations. Structural differences between synthetic or animal based and human hormones may be responsible for side effects that are experienced when non-bio-identicals are used for replacement therapy. |
FEMALE MENOPAUSE WITH BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES
Pre-menopause- "The PMS years"
Women in their 30's should have fairly regular cycles, but increasingly, women are experiencing ovulation problems. Studies have linked this to extremes in exercise, stress, diet, toxins and contraceptive use. This in turn has lead many young women to suffer from PMS symptoms or more serious disorders like endometriosis and infertility. Severe symptoms in these years may be a "warning" sign of hormone imbalance well before end of their periods.
Peri-Menopause- "The ups and downs"
In the years approaching menopause (typically early to late 40'S), women begin to have erratic cycles as n estrogen and progesterone fluctuate between highs and lows. This hormone "roller coaster" takes women through many unwanted symptoms including: hot flashes, mood swings, fatigue / tiredness, depression, sleeping problems, weight gain, vaginal dryness, loss of libido / sexual interest, dry skin and osteoporosis. These symptoms and signs may come on subtle at first but progress throughout this period
Post Menopause- " The progesterone poor years"
Once a woman has gone at least 12 months without a period she is said to be "officially" in menopause. At this time, estrogen levels will drop by as much as 60% and due to lack of ovulation, progesterone to almost zero. estrogen typically will now become the "dominant" hormone and lead to increased symptomology including: increased irritability, fat gain (esp around hips), low thyroid symptoms like feeling cold all the time, increased depression, fibrocystic breasts and breast cancer. This dominance of estrogen can truly be toxic to the body.

STRESS AND CORTISOL IMBALANCE
What causes Cortisol Imbalance?
Cortisol is a hormone that is secreted by the adrenal glands (located on top of both kidneys). It is an important steroid hormone that controls numerous metabolic functions. It is secreted from the adrenals in response to everyday stressors (and boy aren't there many!). When stress and what we can handle gets out of hand, the adrenal glands compensate accordingly by secreting more and more cortisol. The struggle to keep up with high demand for cortisol eventually leads to adrenal fatigue. Both high and low levels of cortisol impact body systems and related hormones. , particularly thyroid and testosterone. In times of "high" stress, the adrenals will also "steal" progesterone from its reproductive duties to make extra cortisol. this leads to a imbalance of estrogen to progesterone as well as other hormones mentioned, which further leads to negative effects and symptoms on the body.
What symptoms may i experience from cortisol imbalance?
Excessively low cortisol may result from increasing adrenal fatigue and may include: chronic fatigue, allergies, asthma, susceptibility to illness and infection, arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Excessively high levels of cortisol are usually due to increased stressors on the human body and from disease. Symptoms may include: muscle and bone loss, increased abdominal fat, elevated blood sugar, sugar cravings, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, suppressed immune function, memory concentration problems, mood and sleep disturbances.
What can be done to restore adrenal balance?
Our experienced and medically trained practitioners can evaluate your cortisol balance by simple blood, urine or saliva tests and restore cortisol imbalance by prescribing natural Bio-Identical hormones and / or homeopathic and nutritional supplements. We can further restore health and energy by supporting adrenal gland function in daily ways: 1. Engage in gentle exercise daily or regimented personal training program 2. Avoid caffeine "pick me ups" 3. Drink plenty of water! 4. Eat mostly organic, hormone free foods, 5. Take Affinity Longevity anti-stress multivitamin, mineral and antioxidant packs 6. Avoid toxic chemicals and pollutants, 7. Get plenty of sleep and naps 8. Learn to meditate / try yoga, 9 Be happy and laugh!
For further questions or for more information on cortisol imbalance please feel free to contact our office and schedule a full and comprehensive consultation. |
MALE ANDROPAUSE AND TESTOSTERONE DEFICIENCY
As Menopause takes its toll on the female so does aging on the male! This is commonly referred to as "Andropause". Men typically lose 2-4% of testosterone production per year beginning in their early 30's and by age 40 can have as much as a 40% drop in testosterone production. With a drop in testosterone, other hormones may be produced that are harmful to the body. Symptoms of testosterone deficiency may include:
lack of energy or motivation, weight gain in abdomen, sleeping disorders, depression, irritability, lack of libido or sexual interest, memory loss, feelings of inadequacy, loss of muscle mass, hair loss, and osteoporosis.
With bio-identical hormone replacement your youthfulness, mental sharpness, energy level, libido and ability to lose fat and gain muscle all may return again!
|
GOALS OF BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (BHRT)
- Alleviate or slow down the symptoms caused by the natural decrease in production of hormones by the body.
- Give the protective benefits which were originally provided by the naturally occurring hormones
- Re-establish hormone balance
The goal of any Hormone replacement therapy regimen should be to provide an adequate supply of the deficient hormone in the form that is as close as possible to that which the body originally produced, therefore resulting in normal physiologic effects and ultimately symptom free effects.
No single person is alike so it is imperative that you and your medical professional work together to customize HRT. Bio-identical hormones are compounded by a pharmacist in needed strength and dosage and administered orally, topically or intramuscularly to meet each individual’s needs. The precise components of each person’s therapy will need to be determined and considered by us after:
1. Physical examination
2. Medical history
3. Symptoms
4. Laboratory testing
Close monitoring with your Affinity medical professional at intervals ranging from 2 months to 1 year will be essential to ensure that appropriate dosage adjustments are made.
Please contact Affinity for more information regarding BHRT and hormone deficiencies. Further important information can be obtained from anti-aging and longevity specialist Dr.Williams’ website at www.drjewilliams.com |

| Cellulite Treatments |
Cellulite or subcutaneous fat is a condition that affects over 90% of the population of women - even women who are slender. Now, a procedure known as Mesotherapy is available that can help to reduce and even eliminate the appearance of cellulite. |
Mesotherapy Mesotherapy is a treatment that has been proven safe and effective in reducing the appearance of cellulite for years. It is a technique that involves using a series of microinjections into the skin?s mesoderm (middle layer) in a systematic pattern. The solution injected during the Mesotherapy treatments breaks down the cellulite leaving skin looking smoother and more supple. While a series of 8-15 treatments is needed to achieve the desired results, a difference can be seen after just one treatment.
|
Is Mesotherapy painful? Multiple micro injections are given in the cellulite areas very rapidly, each distributing in the meso layer (right below the skin). The injections themselves are not painful because of the tiny size of the needle and the force and rapidity with which they are injected. To ease discomfort, topical anesthetic is used on the treatment areas.
|
What exactly is Mesotherapy? Mesotherapy is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction for the treatment of cellulite, weight loss and body sculpting. The procedure has also proven effective for facial and neck rejuvenation. A certified mesotherapy specialist injects a small amount of medication into the mesoderm, the layer of tissues right below the skin. Lipolysis (melting of fat) and normal elimination occurs.
|
How effective is Mesotherapy? Mesotherapy is highly effective for body sculpting. You can lose several inches from love handles, fat pads on back and hips and other problem areas.
|
How long will it take before I see results? Usually results are visible after several treatments. Also keep in mind that it sometimes takes several weeks after the last treatment to see results because of the time needed for some mild swelling to be reabsorbed.
|
Are the results permanent? Mesotherapy is the only answer to permanent reduction of cellulite. With a series of 5- 10 treatments you can experience a loss of 2 to 6 inches from thighs, waist and hips.
|
Are there any side effects? Bruising could occur in a few injection sites, but it resolves by the next session. Redness and mild swelling of the area treated can also occur and usually resolves in 24 hours. All patients experience itching and tingling which is a natural effect that goes away within the first day after the treatment.

| Laser Hair Removal |
Laser hair removal is a revolutionary way to eliminate unsightly or unwanted body hair. Longer lasting and less painful than waxing or electrolysis, less hassle than shaving, laser hair removal is safe and effective for virtually every body part including the back, neck, face, legs, under arms, bikini line and more. Laser hair removal consists of using a laser to produce a beam of highly concentrated light which is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles. When the hair located in those follicles are in their active growth phase known as anagen, the treatment impedes the ability of the hair located at that follicle to regrow. Because not all hairs go through the anagen phase at the same time, a series of treatments is needed to achieve the desired results of permanent hair reduction. |

| Spider Vein Treatments |
Vein problems begin when the vein valves that prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction (reflux) become weak or malfunction. This causes blood to pool in the veins, forcing them to protrude from the skin becoming rope-like and varicose . This increased venous pressure can lead to further failure of other vein valves and to the development of varicose veins.
Spider veins are small red, blue or purple veins that commonly appear on the surface of the thighs, calves and ankles. It's estimated that at least one third of the adult female population is troubled with this common problem. In addition to being unsightly and even embarrassing, varicose veins and spider veins can cause varying degrees of discomfort, including swelling, throbbing, heaviness, achiness and leg cramps.
Affinity MedSpa utilizes Quantum IPL, Nd:Yag laser and sclerotherapy techniques to treat most types of vein problems, typically in one to four treatment sessions. |

| Spider Vein Q & A |
|
How does high-tech laser/light technology compare to traditional sclerotherapy?
The combined light sources of IPL and Nd:YAG offer important benefits over injection therapy. The combination of IPL and Nd:YAG therapy allows treatment of injectable leg veins as well as matting and small spider vessels that are often too small to inject. In addition laser / light therapy is fast, less painful; minimally invasive without needles; and typically does not require compression wrapping.
|
What are the advantages of Lumenis' Nd:YAG technology
Lumenis' proprietary Nd:YAG technology provides multiple synchronized pulsing to selectively heat blood vessels of different sizes and depths. The wavelength of light and pulsing characteristics of the system allow the energy to be virtually invisible to the epidermal melanin, thus protecting the skin and allowing treatment of all skin types and tanned skin. Normally only a few pulses of the laser are required to achieve complete closure and sealing of the vessels. The sapphire cooled Nd:YAG treatment head, available in the IPL Quantum DL and Lumenis One systems (and as an upgrade to other systems), increases patient comfort. Multiple spot sizes available on the Lumenis One “Multispot” Nd:YAG head allows accurate targeting of vessels anywhere on the body including larger telangiectasia on the face.

| Botox Cosmetic |
You've probably heard a lot about BOTOX® Cosmetic. It's been in the news, in fashion, health, and beauty magazines, and on TV. Your friends may even be talking about how it works.
Smooth moderate to severe frown lines between your brows and around your eyes with no surgery and no recovery time. An improvement can be seen within days, lasting for up to 4 months.
With a simple injection, no down time (patients may return to normal activities immediately), no healing time and no scars, what are often called "frown" lines can be eliminated. Very small doses of the toxin can be injected directly into the specific muscles which cause the unwanted lines of expression. This causes only those muscles to become paralyzed. Following the injection, it can take from three to fourteen days to achieve maximal results. Softening of facial lines lasts from two to five months. To maintain the effect, injections should be repeated every four months.

| Botox Q & A |
|
How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?
Those moderate to severe lines between your brows and around your eyes form over time as the result of muscle activity. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscles between your brows. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form. |
When will I see results from a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment?
Within days, you may see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines and crows feet. Lines continue to improve for up to a month, and results can last for up to 4 months. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women rated the improvement in their appearance as moderate to better 1 month after treatment. Results may vary. |
How long does BOTOX® Cosmetic last?
Results from treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic can last for up to 4 months. If you discontinue treatment, the lines gradually will look like they did before treatment. Over time, those who are consistent with their treatments, may require treatments less frequently. |
Who should administer BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Any authorized healthcare professional can administer BOTOX® Cosmetic. |
Who should not use BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic should not be used in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neurological disorders such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert- Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects. |
Will I experience any side effects?
The most common side effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Less frequently occurring (<3%) adverse reactions include pain in the face, erythema (redness) at the injection site, and muscle weakness. These events are thought to be associated with the injection and occurred within the first week. |
Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?
Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you "had work done." The muscle activity that causes frown lines and crows feet is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows. |
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic affordable?
When considering your facial aesthetic options, BOTOX® Cosmetic is quite affordable. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery's 2003 survey, BOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the least expensive facial aesthetic procedures in the United States. Like other appearance-related investments, such as hair coloring and cuts, teeth whitening, and chemical peels, the cost must be weighed relative to your expectations. |
What exactly is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a non-surgical, physician- administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. During treatment, very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months. Results may vary. |
Is treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic painful?
Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injecting, your physician may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Many people return directly to work or normal activity following BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. |
What will happen to the frown lines between my brows if I choose not to continue treatments?
If you do not continue treatments, these moderate to severe lines will gradually look like they did before treatment. |

| IPL Photo Rejuvenation Q & A |
|
What is an IPL treatment like? Each IPL treatment takes about 30-45 minutes. Patients tolerate the non- invasive procedure very well. Those with more sensitive skin may use a topical anesthetic, applied 30 minutes before the procedure. Before treatment, a cold gel is applied to the area treated, and you may be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. During the treatment, you will hear a beep each time the machine is used. Afterwards, for a few minutes or hours, the skin may be flushed and appear irritated. Brown spots will actually be slightly darker at first. These initial effects usually fade in within hours, but can occasionally last for a few days.
|
Why is IPL so exciting? Medical lasers deliver a specific band of light that will generally treat one skin problem. Affinity MedSpa's Quantum SR IPL Photorejuvenation Systems by Lumenis Inc., deliver a broad band of pulsed light, a sensible to laser surgery and chemical peels. Following a treatment, most patients can go back to their usual activities and can immediately apply make-up. IPL is a safe, non-invasive solution that can be customized to your individual needs and will provide superior cosmetic results and high levels of satisfaction. After only the first treatment, skin feels smoother and appears more evenly toned.
|
What are the expected results? Following IPL there is a gradual decrease in overall redness, flushing and acne- like breakouts. Treated skin will become smoother with a reduction in fine wrinkles and pore size as well as fading of sun spots or uneven pigmentation. In time, the results are smoother, healthier, younger-appearing skin.
|
How many and how often? A series of at least 5 treatments is needed to obtain optimal results. Some patients may benefit from more treatments while others less depending on the severity of the condition treated. Treatments are given 3-4 weeks apart. Based on the high level of demand for this procedure, many offices are offering inappropriate substitutes. Don’t be fooled by other practices that give only a single “pass” with the machine or only treat “part” of the face with a machine that is not a true IPL machine.
|
How much does it cost? Costs are per treatment and in packages of 5 (less expensive). Compared to other aesthetic surgeries, its is affordable and competitively priced. It is more expensive than microdermabrasion or light chemical peels, and less expensive than laser resurfacing or a facelift. It is not typically covered by health insurance.
|
Am I a candidate? If your appearance is marred by facial redness (rosacia), pigmentation, or signs of aging, or if you would like to maintain a youthful, healthy appearance, then IPL is for you. Contact our office for a consultation to see if we can help you with the latest technology avalable today!
|
Is it safe? IPL is non-invasive and very safe. You can usually return directly to work and apply makeup immediately. You can resume all your activities (except sun exposure) immediately. Very rarely, temporary mild bruising or blistering may occur in the treated areas, which will resolve in a few days.

| Vascular & Pigmented Lesions Q & A |
|
How do the Lumenis One and IPL Quantum treat mature hemangioma? Mature hemangiomas can be rather thick, namely part of them is superficial and part is deep. Lumenis One is equipped with two treatments heads that can effectively target the different depths of the hemangioma. The Nd:YAG head can be used first to reach the deeper parts of the lesion, while being marginally absorbed by the superficial telangiectasia that often lay on the surface of the hemangioma. Excessive heat production is thus eliminated. Following a few sessions with the Nd:YAG, the IPL can be used to treat the remaining superficial blood vessels.
|
What product solutions are available to treat vascular lesions? Depending on the specific nature of the condition, Lumenis offers two key solutions for the treatment of benign vascular lesions. The IPL family, featuring the IPL Quantum product line and the Lumenis One platform successfully treats a broad range of vascular conditions including telangiectasia, port wine stains, hemangiomas, etc. Deeper vascular lesions can be treated with our Nd:YAG laser systems available on the IPL Quantum platform and the Lumenis One.
|
Can the Lumenis One effectively treat Rosacea? Although the IPL Quantum can target the telangiectasia and blush associated with rosacea, the high power, short pulses and optimal pulsing technology only available with the Lumenis One is believed to result in superior treatment for the vascular symptoms associated with rosacea.
|
Some pigmented lesions have to be removed surgically. Can they be treated by IPL instead? Technically, it is possible to treat such pigmented lesions with IPL and diminish their brown color; However, doing so does not affect the pre-malignanat cells; it only obscures them and delays the diagnosis. It is therefore essential to consult a dermatologist prior to IPL treatment of any suspect pigmented lesion.
|
Can IPL treat hairy pigmented lesions? Yes, due to the versatility of filters, IPL is an effective treatment for hairy pigmented lesions. IPL with longer filters can penetrate deeper than IPL with short filters. Thus, a shorter filter may be used to treat the superficial (epidermal) pigmented lesion while a longer filter may be applied to remove the hair.

| Microdermabrasion |
Crows feet, expression lines and other lines on the face can cause you to appear older than you are. Microdermabrasion can help reduce the appearance of the crow's feet and fine lines that come with aging and make you look as young as you feel.
Microdermabrasion is a skin-refreshing technique that helps repair facial skin that takes a beating from the sun and the effects of aging. Non-invasive and non-wounding to the skin's surface, the procedure entails virtually no discomfort, down time or recovery. The esthetician uses a device like a fine sandblaster to spray tiny crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin. As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation. Clients typically experience some redness for about an hour after the procedure. In addition to the face, Microdermabrasion can be successfully used on the neck, arms and hands.
Contact Affinity MedSpa today to see if microdermabrasion is right for you! |
What is Microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is the most revolutionary new skin restoration process. It is used for skin resurfacing and treating a range of skin abnormalities. It regenerates the epidermal cell structure increasing skin's elasticity and collagen, resulting in a more youthful skin.
|
How does it work? This gentle technique is performed with a jet of fine mineral crystal. These crystals are vacuumed across the skin to remove the dead and damaged skin cells and to stimulate the collagen beneath the surface of the skin, creating better skin tone.
|
How soon will I see some improvement? You should see some positive result with even one single treatment. To obtain the maximum result, we recommend a series of six treatments at least 2 weeks apart.
|
Is the treatment safe? Yes. The entire treatment is performed in sterile environment and there are almost no side effects and little trauma to the skin. All tools that contact the treatment area are either disposable or able to be sterilized.
|
How does this compare to chemical peels? Microdermabrasion is a safe and effective alternative to the use of chemical acids, the results are more predictable and can be accomplished in gradual stages with no down time or redness. In most cases client sees immediate results with quicker recovery.
|
What types of skin and color can be treated? All types of skin and color.
|
Is this treatment painful? No. It is virtually painless.
|
| Chemical Peels |
Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. For this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin which causes it to separate and eventually peel off. The new regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than old skin, in addition to being more even in color. Chemical peels have the ability to create a thicker epidermis, and production of increased amounts of collagen and elastin in skin. The end result of these changes is increased volume of tissue, which tightens the superficial skin layers ultimately leading to improvement of wrinkles. |
What can a chemical peel accomplish? Chemical peeling is often used to treat fine lines under the eyes and around mouth. Wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging and hereditary factors can often be reduced or even eliminated by this procedure. Acne and acne scarring can effectively be treated while smoothing texture and eliminating unwanted hyperpigmented spots and blemishes.
|
What should be expected after treatment? Depending on type of peel, a reaction similar to a mild to moderate sunburn occurs following the peel. Superficial peeling usually involves some redness while intermediate depth peels sometimes results in swelling
|
What are the possible complications? In certain skin types, there is a risk of developing a temporary or permanent color change in the skin. Chemical peeling may not fully elimnate hyperpigmentation if patient is taking birth control pills , pregnant, or has a family history of brownish discoloration on the face. These factors may predispose to increased hyperpigmentation and brown spots.
|
How are chemical peels performed? The procedure is commonly performed on the face and neck by our licensed clinical aesthetician. Prior to performing a chemical peel, the skin is cleansed thouroughly and prepped. The natural acid is then applied to skin in layers using gauze or brush. Due to variable skin sensitivities, each skin type may tolerate only a certain number of layers. Your clinical specialist will determine the correct type of peel and layers to treat your skin type and condition.
|
